A heat pump uses electricity to drive the compressor and fan instead, unlike a traditional electric resistance water heater that uses electricity to directly heat the water. While the outside temperature is higher than the cold refrigerant, the heat pump will absorb heat and move it to the water.

When the sun’s shining, collectors on the roof convert the energy in solar radiation to heat the water. Heat rises, and that applies to hot water as well. So when the water is pumped to the bottom of the storage tank the heated water moves to the top of the tank. The hot water is drawn out from a pipe near the top of the tank and is instantly available to your home.
